JEN Synthetone SX1000

Released in 1978, the JEN SX1000 is one of the classic affordable European monosynths: straightforward, immediate, and far more musical than its modest panel might suggest. It gave players hands-on subtractive synthesis at a time when many bigger-name instruments were still significantly more expensive.

The reason it remains loved is simple: the SX1000 has a strong filter, a satisfyingly direct layout, and a tone that feels both gritty and lyrical. It can do basses, leads, simple effects, and nasal solo lines with very little setup, which makes it the kind of synth that invites performance rather than endless menu diving.

How It Works

  • Single-oscillator monophonic architecture with classic analog waveforms and noise
  • Strong low-pass filter and envelopes give it much of its expressive range
  • Simple panel encourages fast performance editing rather than preset recall

Legacy & Evolution

The SX1000 represents a generation of compact monosynths that made analog synthesis accessible beyond flagship studio gear. It is especially valued now because its tone is unmistakably vintage without feeling polite or over-refined.
